Horizontal Curves (Extra Widening)

Widening of Pavement on Horizontal Curves:

We = Wm + Wps
Where
We = Total Widening,
Wm=  Mechanical widening, to account for the off tracking due to the rigidity of wheel base
Wm = nl2/2R
Where n = number of lanes,
l= length of wheel base of largest vehicle, metres (generally 6m for commercial vehicles).
Wps = psychological widening
Wps=V/ [9.5R^(1/2)]

Where ‘V’ is speed in kmph.

Note:
>> For sharp curves of radius less than 50m., the extra widening shall be provided on inner side of curve.
>>  For curves of R >50m , widening shall be equally distributed o both sides of the curves.
